Scott’s eyes were dark and unreadable, but if you looked closely, you’d catch a trace of something even deeper, a shadow he tried to hide.
Mamie had always assumed he didn’t know she’d been digging into his past. She never imagined that he’d been watching her every move from the start, quietly in control.
She tried to say something, but her lips just parted, and nothing came out. Even her breathing was shaky, tinged with nerves.
Seven years ago, Scott had given a guest lecture at a university. On his way out, a bike crashed into his car.
His driver jumped out right away to check on the student. There was a girl in a white dress, her knees scraped and bleeding, her brows drawn together in a frown. When she looked up, her eyes flashed with irritation.
“I was riding right in front of you. How’d you manage to hit me? And this bike is brand new.”
Mamie was more upset about her bike than herself.
The driver looked mortified. “I’m really sorry. A little cat ran out so suddenly, and I swerved to avoid it. I didn’t mean to hit you.”
“Are you okay? Do you want me to take you to the campus clinic?”
Mamie spotted a tabby cat flicking its tail in the bushes nearby. She could only sigh at her bad luck. “It’s fine, really. Nothing serious.”
She didn’t want to bother with the clinic anyway. She still had a shift at her part-time job.
She wobbled to her feet, leaning on her bike, and started limping away, pushing it slowly as she went.
Scott never left the car. The only thing that stuck in his mind was the shock of red on her pale legs. He glanced at his driver, his voice low. “Find out what department she’s from. Transfer her money for the medical bills.”
That night, Mamie got a notification for a thousand yuan in her account. She stared at it, completely confused.
“Who would send me money? Is this some kind of scam?”
Scams weren’t as common back then, but she’d heard enough stories about refund schemes to be wary.
Mamie didn’t take any chances. She even went to the police station, just in case.
