Claire stepped in with a smile. “Scott, don’t mind Adonis. He’s just really close to Mamie, that’s all.”
Scott nodded. “It’s okay. Really. I’m not bothered.”
The simple wedding wrapped up after what felt like half a day.
Later, as Mamie scrolled through her phone, she got a blank text from an unknown number. She barely glanced at it before deleting it.
Meanwhile, Vince sat in his car, finishing a cigarette before telling the driver to head out. After everything, all the twists and turns, he still couldn’t believe those two actually ended up together.

Not long after the wedding, New Year’s Eve arrived.
Garth wore a red embroidered outfit that practically screamed celebration. He even had on a playful little red hat, and it made both Dorothea and Mamie melt on the spot.
“Garth, you’re too cute for words,” Dorothea gushed, handing him a thick red envelope. “This is for you—buy yourself some snacks.”
The envelope was so fat, there was no need to count it to know it was a lot.
Garth fiddled with the pompom on his hat. “Thank you, Dorothea! I hope you’re happy every day, and I wish you and Latham a baby boy soon!”
Latham grinned. “Try wishing for a baby girl. Say it, and you get another envelope.”
Garth caught on fast. “Okay! I hope Latham and Dorothea have a baby girl soon!”
“Latham, my envelope!” he called out.
Latham laughed and stuffed another envelope into Garth’s chubby hand.
Mamie had come prepared, too. She handed Garth a gift along with a red envelope.
“I picked out that whole outfit for you, Garth. This is my New Year’s gift, and here’s an envelope too.”
Garth ran over to Mamie, his short legs moving as fast as he could manage. “Mamie, can I call you mommy?”
His cheeks were bright red, and his eyes were full of hope. He’d been wanting to ask for ages.
