When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 287

Aldin caught on right away and slipped out of the garage.

Dorothea twisted in Latham’s arms, trying to wriggle free, but he held her waist tight. “Try that again and I might just keep you right here.”

She froze, not daring to move.

Her gaze was steady as she looked at him. “Let me out of the car.”

He just smiled. “Not until you tell me why you’ve been upset these last few days.”

Dorothea didn’t answer. At first, she hadn’t even been that mad, but then Latham shut down every time she brought up what happened when he was abroad. That hurt. She’d given him everything, trusted him with her whole heart, but he still kept secrets from her. And to make things worse, Bonita’s sly little comments had started to get to her.

She turned her head away, her voice sharp. “I’m not mad.”

Latham let go with one hand and gently pinched her cheeks. “Not mad? Come on, sweetheart. I want to make things right. Just tell me what I did wrong. I’ll change, okay?”

He was softening his tone, trying to make her feel better, but Dorothea wasn’t giving in. “Why do you even care? Go talk to your first love. Maybe she needs you.”

Latham blinked, caught off guard.

“My first love? Who’s been filling your head with nonsense?”

Dorothea’s cheeks burned. She couldn’t hold it back any longer. “Just tell me. Did you marry me because I look like Beatty?”

Latham almost laughed in disbelief.

So that’s what this was all about. She was jealous of Beatty.

He nodded. “Really. Beatty’s just my doctor. I don’t know who’s been trying to mess with us, but it’s all made up. If there was ever anything between us, do you think I’d still be here, with you? Last time she came by, it was just to tell me Bonita was giving you a hard time.”

Dorothea gave a small nod. “From now on, I can handle work stuff myself. If something’s too much, I’ll let you know. Do you trust me?”

“I do.”

It wasn’t that Dorothea wanted to push Latham away. She just wanted to stand on her own. She didn’t want to be spoiled until she forgot how to handle things.

“Got it. Whatever you say, I’m on your side.”

Latham’s eyes darkened as he watched her, his gaze lingering on her soft, pretty face. “Well, sweetheart, now it’s time for you to pay me back.”
