When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 238

Mamie stared at her mother, her eyes full of confusion. “Mom, did you tell the nurse I’m your adopted daughter?”

Claire froze for a moment. “Mamie, this really isn’t the time for that... My mind’s all over the place right now. Let’s talk after your dad wakes up, okay?”

Adopted or not, Mamie still loved her father. She sat outside the operating room, her face shadowed with worry, waiting for any news.

Seven years ago, she'd had a terrible car accident and hit her head. Most of her memories from before were just a blur. When she woke up, her parents were the ones by her side.

After she recovered, she went straight to college, studied what she loved, met Addison, and fell in love. Things just kept getting better. They talked about marriage, went back home to plan the wedding. Life had always felt so smooth, like nothing from her past could ever touch her.

But now, the people she thought were her real parents were saying she was adopted? Then where were her birth parents?

She had a thousand questions, but watching her mom fall apart, Mamie just kept quiet.

The surgery dragged on for four hours. When it was finally over, her dad was still in a coma.

Claire had just gotten out of the hospital herself, so Mamie took care of her. “Mom, you should go home and rest. I’ll stay here at the hospital. If there’s any news, I’ll call you tonight.”

Claire, worried that Mamie might feel distant, tried to reassure her. “Mamie, your dad and I have always thought of you as our own. Don’t let this get to you. We’ll talk when your dad wakes up, okay?”

Mamie nodded, barely listening. “I know, Mom. Go home. I’ll take care of things here.”

She couldn’t sleep at all. It felt like her entire twenty-seven years had just unraveled.

...

That night, Dorothea got a message from Mamie, asking for three more days off. Dorothea approved it right away.

Latham finished getting ready for bed and climbed in beside her.

“Who are you texting?” he asked.

Dorothea locked her phone. “Mamie. Her dad was in a car accident. She asked for a few days off.”

Latham looked surprised. He’d seen Scott earlier, and Scott hadn’t mentioned anything about it.
