When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 205

Dorothea hadn’t touched a drop that night. Carmen, on the other hand, had definitely overdone it. The scent of alcohol clung to her like a second skin.

“Carmen, let me take you home,” Dorothea offered.

Carmen waved her off, grinning and slurring her words. “No need. I’ve already called a driver. You don’t have to worry about me, Dorothea. Seriously.”

She giggled, her voice thick. “Besides, what if you ran into Albert? I didn’t protect you before, but now it’s my turn to look out for you!”

Dorothea felt a wave of warmth rush through her. Her past with Albert had nothing to do with Carmen. She shouldn’t have to feel guilty about any of it, but Carmen always took things to heart.

Especially after Dorothea decided to marry Latham, Carmen seemed even more upset. She couldn’t understand why Dorothea would settle for a man who, from all appearances, wasn’t even interested in women. Dorothea deserved so much better.

But it turned out to be a big misunderstanding. Latham was actually more attentive and caring than Carmen had ever expected.

Dorothea stayed with Carmen while they waited for the car. Thankfully, the driver arrived quickly. Even tipsy, Carmen was still trying to take care of her.

“Dorothea, come on, get in too. I’ll make sure you get home first, then I’ll head back.”

Dorothea didn’t argue. She just slid into the car, feeling oddly touched by Carmen’s insistence.

When Dorothea finally got home, she realized she hadn’t messaged Latham to let him know she’d be late. Standing in the entryway, she checked her phone. No messages from him. She figured he wasn’t home yet.

The apartment was so dark, the shadows seemed almost alive. That’s when she noticed a shape slouched on the sofa.

Her heart jumped into her throat and she dropped her bag. The sound echoed sharply in the quiet.

“You’re home?” Dorothea frowned. “Why are you sitting in the dark?”
