When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 20

“Dorothea, what’s going on with you and Albert?” Carmen called, her voice full of worry.

Dorothea’s heart skipped a beat. Did she somehow find out?

“Carmen, why are you asking me that?” Dorothea tried to sound calm, holding it together. The last thing she wanted was for Carmen to know anything about her and Albert. It was about dignity, or maybe just pride, but as long as their secret stayed hidden, nobody could laugh at her. She just wanted to quietly erase those ridiculous memories.

“You really don’t know? I was going to recommend you for a job at my cousin’s company, but he told me Albert made it clear that no one’s allowed to hire you. Dorothea, did you make Albert mad? Even if you did, this is way over the line. Who does he think he is, telling every company not to hire you? I’m going to talk to him about this!”

Dorothea arched an eyebrow. So that was the reason. She actually felt a little relieved. She quickly tried to calm Carmen down. “Carmen, please don’t do anything impulsive. Maybe it’s because I interrupted his date with his fiancée. I went to see Albert at that party to get a document signed. Seriously, don’t argue with Albert because of me. I’m okay, and I have a plan. So really, don’t worry.”

But Carmen wasn’t having any of it. “Dorothea, don’t be scared. I’ll keep looking out for you. No way Albert can control the whole world.”

After hanging up, Dorothea let out a bitter laugh. She sent Carmen a quick text, still trying to reassure her. More than anything, Dorothea didn’t want to be tangled up with Albert anymore. Sooner or later, she’d end up running her father’s hotel, and when that happened, she wouldn’t have to cross paths with Albert ever again.

Albert waited two days. He’d been the one to get someone to leak the news to Carmen, but Dorothea still hadn’t called.

Meanwhile, Carola had caught wind of the situation. She figured Albert must have finally gotten tired of Dorothea.

“Albert, are you busy?”

Carola showed up at his office again, cake box in hand.
