When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 198

After dinner, Scott didn’t even try to argue with Mamie about paying the bill. He just quietly thanked her at the end, “Thanks for today, Mamie. Next time, it’s on me.”

Latham couldn’t help but smirk to himself. So this is how it starts, one favor after another. That’s how people get tied together. Who knew Scott could be so persistent when he liked someone?

When it was time to head home, Dorothea was the one who drove Mamie back. After she dropped Mamie off, she glanced over at Latham. “Do you think Scott’s into Mamie?”

“It’s obvious.”

No wonder she’d felt something was off at dinner. Scott had offered to take Mamie home, but Dorothea didn’t let him. She wasn’t sure if Mamie liked Scott back, so she’d purposely stepped in and taken Mamie herself.

“Well, let Scott chase her on his own. Mamie’s never been married, after all.”

And Scott already had a divorce and a kid behind him.

Latham smiled. “Scott’s never been married, actually.”

Dorothea went silent.

Dorothea thought she’d made things crystal clear with Albert, but he showed up at her office again the next day.

Security called her directly. “Dorothea, there’s someone here to see you. He says his last name is Clark.”

“A man?” Dorothea’s tone was frosty.

“Yes.”

Figures. Albert again. Dorothea couldn’t even guess what he wanted this time.

She grabbed her phone and headed downstairs. Through the glass doors, she spotted his tall frame waiting outside. Her eyes narrowed when she saw the deep gray suit he was wearing. She’d picked that out herself, spending months of her salary to get it tailored for him. It was supposed to be his birthday present.

They’d planned to celebrate together, but Albert ditched her again. He’d said it was a last-minute business trip and didn’t come back for three days. Dorothea could still remember how she’d waited all night on her birthday, wishing she could go back and shake some sense into herself.

Now, seeing Albert show up in that suit, Dorothea just felt annoyed.

She crossed her arms and walked up to him, her voice cold. “What do you want?”

“Dorothea, you lied to me.”

She raised an eyebrow, her eyes steady, not giving anything away.

The calmer Dorothea was, the more anxious Albert got. “Why did you lie to me? I know it was you in the attic that night.”

“I mistook you for someone else. I always thought the girl I saved was Carola.”

“You can play piano too. Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

“Why?” Albert grabbed her arm, his voice desperate.

Dorothea jerked away, shaking his hand off. “Don’t touch me.”
