When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 172

Albert showed up at his parents’ place earlier than usual. He glanced at his dad and asked, “Dad, have you seen Carmen? She’s not answering my calls.”

His father looked up from the newspaper. “Carmen’s upstairs. She said she was up too late last night and needed to catch up on sleep.”

No wonder it was late. She’d been running around at almost midnight trying to get Latham’s number. Latham was about to get married. What was she thinking?

Albert marched upstairs, fuming. He told the housekeeper, not very gently, to go wake Carmen. At least he stopped himself from barging in himself.

Carmen stumbled out of bed, hair a complete mess, and glared at Albert. “What is it, Albert? I was sleeping. Can’t it wait?”

“No. Come to the study. We need to talk. Now.”

Carmen’s feelings toward Albert were a mess. Just yesterday, she’d figured out that Carola was probably behind that assistant messing with Dorothea. And Carola was only after Dorothea because of Albert.

She kicked at her slippers, clearly annoyed, and dragged herself into the study after him.

“What’s so secret it can’t be said outside? Why the study?”

Albert didn’t waste time. “Carmen, you’re not a kid anymore. You’re twenty-five. You should know better. I told you to stay away from Latham but you just ignored me. Why were you looking for him yesterday?”

Carmen’s temper flared. “You’ve got a lot of nerve, Albert. So what if I was looking for Latham? He’s a hundred times more reliable than you’ll ever be!”

Albert’s eyes narrowed. “Is that how you talk to me?”

Carmen shot back, “Albert, introducing you to Dorothea is the one thing I regret most in my life.”

If she hadn’t always dragged Dorothea along to see Albert, maybe Dorothea wouldn’t have ended up working for him, getting hurt by him, or being targeted by Carola now.

She’d always known Dorothea was sensitive, always talking about her grandparents. Back in college, when Dorothea lost her grandfather, Carmen had stayed by her side for weeks, trying to cheer her up.

She used to wonder why someone as good as Dorothea never seemed to get any love from her parents. Later, she found out Dorothea’s dad had died early and her mom remarried. All that time without her parents’ love made Dorothea crave it even more, made her so sensitive.
