When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 169

Dorothea froze for a second. They had only been apart for a few hours, so why was he suddenly so prickly?

Latham pressed his lips together. “Take my car. I’ll drive you tomorrow. Just leave yours at the office.”

Dorothea didn’t bother arguing. She opened the passenger door and got in.

As Latham buckled his seatbelt, he glanced at her. “Didn’t you say you wanted to switch assistants?”

“Did you find someone?”

Dorothea replied without much thought. “Yeah, I did. It’s a guy. He’s still on probation. I’ll see how it goes, and if it doesn’t work out, I’ll switch to a woman.”

“Are you okay with me having a male assistant?” She turned to look at him, serious.

She hadn’t given it much thought, but since they were married for business reasons, honesty just made sense. Even if there were no feelings, misunderstandings were the last thing they needed.

Latham’s throat bobbed. “I don’t mind.”

“Good. I only have a professional relationship with everyone at work, so you really don’t have to worry.”

He gave her a little smile. “That’s good.”

He didn’t ask about the photo. It wasn’t about trust. He just felt a little jealous, that was all.

The next afternoon, Dorothea caught her flight, bringing her assistant along. As soon as they landed, she rushed straight to the cocktail party.

The only upside to having a male assistant was that he could help shield her from all the toasts, but tonight was different. This time, there was no getting out of it.

Even though she’d taken something to help with the drinking, her stomach still burned by the end of the night.

“Dorothea, should I take you to the hospital? You’ve been holding your stomach for a while,” Edmond asked, sounding worried.

She waved him off. “No, I’m fine.”

Just then, Latham’s call came through. She motioned for Edmond to keep driving, then answered the phone.

“Are you done with your event?” she asked, leaning back and closing her eyes, trying to get comfortable.

“It’s finished,” Latham said, his voice relaxed. “I just wanted to check in. Text me when you get to the hotel.”
