Dorothea pushed Latham away, her voice a little softer and sweeter than she realized. “Who wants to stick around with you?”
Latham just laughed and took a step back, slipping one hand into his pocket. There was a hint of a smile on his lips. “So that’s it? You really do just use people and toss them aside, huh?”
Dorothea turned her head, refusing to answer. The truth was, she didn’t have a good excuse.
Latham’s gaze darkened and the teasing left his voice. “Are you really that scared Albert will find out?”
“I’m not scared,” Dorothea replied quickly.
“I’m just not ready to go public right now. His wedding is coming up. I’ll give him a big surprise at the ceremony.”
Albert’s wedding was less than a week away.
Latham didn’t say anything. He narrowed his eyes as if he didn’t care, but deep down, he couldn’t shake the feeling that Dorothea still had feelings for Albert.
After leaving the terrace, Albert went back to the private room. The urge to keep drinking was gone. He grabbed his jacket. “I’m heading out. You guys have fun.”
Someone joked, “Haha, Albert’s off to keep Dorothea company.”
Albert’s eyes flickered. Suddenly, he felt a pang of guilt toward Carola for what he’d just done. He pulled out his phone and called her. “Are you asleep?”
Carola sounded extra happy to hear from him. “Albert, I’m not asleep!”
“I got you some late-night snacks. Wait for me. I’ll be at your place in an hour.”
Carola twisted the bedsheet in her fingers, her face turning pink. “Okay, I’ll wait for you.”
Maybe she’d just been overthinking things before. Once the wedding was over, she was sure Albert would only have eyes for her. Dorothea or any other woman—they were just stand-ins.
