When Dorothea clocked out, she thought she’d do a little shopping. She was still missing a couple of cute accessories.
“Hi, can I see these stud earrings?” she asked.
“Of course, ma’am.” The salesgirl beamed at her. “You know, these teardrop earrings look amazing on you. They’re perfect for any occasion. Want to give them a try?”
“I actually think these would suit you better.” Mamie grinned, pointing to another pair on the tray.
“Mamie?” Dorothea blinked in surprise. “Wow, what are the odds? I didn’t expect to bump into you here.”
Mamie laughed. “Yeah, I’m just looking for some jewelry for the wedding.”
“No way. Me too. Let me try on the ones you picked,” Dorothea said, her smile growing.
Having someone to give advice really made a difference. The pair Mamie suggested looked even better, more stylish and versatile.
Dorothea didn’t even need to think about it. “Thanks, I’ll take these,” she told the salesgirl.
She turned to Mamie, grateful. “Seriously, I’m so glad I ran into you. Want to shop together for a while? I’ll help you look for whatever you need.”
Mamie nodded, and the two of them wandered through the store together. Soon, Mamie’s eyes landed on a pair of matching couple watches. Dorothea couldn’t help but feel a little envious. “You’re so thoughtful. Your boyfriend’s lucky.”
Mamie smiled softly. “He spoils me more. We take care of each other.”
Eventually, Mamie paid for her things, and they stepped out of the store together, heading toward the parking lot. Dorothea noticed something change in Mamie’s expression. Her cheeks looked a bit pale.
“Are you okay?” Dorothea asked, worried.
Mamie’s hand curled into a fist as she stared at a couple hugging in the distance. She took a slow breath. “Dorothea, can you hold my shopping bags for a second? I need to deal with something.”
Dorothea hesitated for a second, but nodded and took the bags. “Sure.”
Mamie gave her a quick, tight smile before walking straight ahead. Dorothea watched her go, then glanced at the couple Mamie was heading toward. A bad feeling prickled at the back of her mind. No way… That can’t be Mamie’s boyfriend, right?
Just thinking about it made her hurry to catch up, in case Mamie needed her.
