Her heart skipped a beat, just a little out of sync. "I can hear you just fine. No need to lean in so close."
He let out a low chuckle, the sound rumbling from his chest. "Dorothea, are you clueless or just pretending? Can’t you tell I’m trying to seduce you?"
Car horns blared behind them, snapping her back to reality.
Latham slid back into his seat and pressed the gas, eyes flicking over to catch the flush spreading from her ears all the way down her neck. For the rest of the drive, he went back to his usual, serious self and didn’t tease her again.
As soon as the car stopped, Dorothea practically bolted out, sprinting up to her house and slamming the door shut. She acted like she was afraid he might actually follow her inside.
Latham stared at her closed door, lost in his thoughts.
How could he get her to share a bed with him? That was the question.
...
The next morning, Dorothea headed straight to the office.
She arrived at the hotel early to make sure everything was in place for the meeting. Security, logistics, every detail had to be perfect. There was no room for mistakes.
She was surprised to spot someone in the lobby. "Mamie, you’re here too?"
Mamie had been at the hotel for the last three days. "Yeah, I’m here with the team to do inventory. Today’s the last day. We should finish up soon."
Dorothea suddenly realized it was already the end of the month. Still, it was rare to see the Finance Director personally supervising inventory.
She gave Mamie an approving look. "Alright, I’ll leave you to it. I’ve got to head upstairs."
Mamie offered a small smile and watched her go. Truthfully, this kind of task didn’t require her attention. But she’d heard the procurement officer was loyal to the previous general manager and had a reputation for shady deals. Mamie hadn’t been with the company long, so she wanted to set an example by jumping in and double-checking the fixed assets and supplies herself. Most people hated this kind of work, so her joining in made a difference.
