Garth’s eyes sparkled as he tried to figure out exactly how Dorothea was sitting.
“Aunt Dorothea, I came to see you!”
Dorothea’s earlobes went bright red, so red they could almost bleed. She gave Latham a little punch where he was sprawled beside her and whispered, “Move. Now.”
Latham clicked his tongue, obviously not happy about it, but finally slid off the hospital bed.
He squinted at the tiny visitor, looking pretty annoyed. All that sweet, romantic tension he’d been building up had just evaporated because of this little guy.
Out in the hallway, Ladd cleared his throat before coming in, leaning on his cane.
“Hey, Dorothea, you look way better today. When I heard you fainted yesterday, I was scared out of my mind.”
It hit Dorothea then. She’d actually been unconscious for a whole day.
“Yeah, Aunt Dorothea! I was so scared, too! Here, let me blow on you—if I do, you’ll get better faster!”
Garth’s chubby cheeks puffed out as he scooted closer to Dorothea. Latham rolled his eyes and hooked two fingers in Garth’s collar, pulling him back.
“Didn’t your teacher ever mention boys and girls should have a little space?”
“Garth, that’s my wife. Don’t get too close to her, okay?”
Dorothea could feel her cheeks burning hotter and shot Latham a sharp look. “Garth, ignore him. He’s just teasing you.”
Garth made a little grumbling noise, then dug a piece of chocolate out of his pocket. “Aunt Dorothea, this is my favorite kind. If you get hungry, eat it, so you don’t faint again.”
He honestly thought Dorothea had passed out from hunger and wanted to cheer her up with his favorite treat.
Garth even threw a judgmental look at Latham, like, how could he not feed her? So mean.
Latham just shrugged off whatever Garth was thinking and turned his attention to his father.
