Mamie flashed a soft smile. “Yeah, today was my first day. I spent most of it just getting to know how things work around the office.”
Dorothea tried to keep the conversation going. “Do you drive?”
Mamie shook her head. “No, I just got back. I still need to get a local license.”
Dorothea nodded, relieved when the elevator doors finally opened and they reached the lobby.
“I’m heading out,” Dorothea said. “See you tomorrow.”
Mamie replied with a mild, “See you tomorrow.”
Outside, Dorothea spotted the Bentley parked by the entrance. She was surprised to see Garth waiting for her on the sidewalk.
She jogged over and playfully pinched his earlobe. “Why aren’t you waiting in the car?”
“I just couldn’t wait any longer.”
“That works out. We can just walk from here.”
Dorothea took Garth’s hand and led him to their favorite little shop. They’d been there together three times already. She ended up buying three cute little hair clips in a row.
“Garth, you don’t have to give all of these at once. Spread them out a bit.”
Garth grinned, almost proud. “Why? My uncle says you can’t win a wife by being stingy.”
Dorothea pressed a palm to her forehead. She wondered what Latham had been telling this kid.
She couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, you do whatever your uncle says, then.”
Back in the car, Garth had downed a ton of water. Suddenly, he started squirming in his seat. “Aunt Dorothea, I need to pee.”
Dorothea saw his cheeks turning red and quickly took him to the restroom. “Can you go in by yourself?”
Garth puffed up his little chest. “Of course I can!”
Dorothea turned away and took a work call while she waited.
When Garth came out, he spotted Dorothea’s back and was about to run to her, but then someone passed by and caught his eye.
