When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 434

After Brody left, Nelly went through her nightly routine and got into bed early. But as soon as she closed her eyes, all she could think about was the way Jonah looked at her. From their very first meeting, he'd always made her feel safe and warm. After everything she'd been through in her five-year marriage, she had promised herself she would never lean on anyone again, and definitely wouldn’t fall in love so easily. But now, she felt herself wavering. She even started to imagine what it would be like if she and Jonah ended up together. Maybe… But life doesn’t really work that way. There’s no such thing as maybe, only people who are meant to cross paths but aren’t meant to stay together.

The next morning, Carrie left early with Nicholas and April. Since Nelly and Brody were heading out of town, Nicholas volunteered to watch the kids. Brody felt at ease with that arrangement. The Watsons were definitely more reliable than the Garlands.

Meanwhile, Tina was a bundle of nerves ever since she found out who Nelly really was. She avoided reaching out, terrified and constantly worrying about how to smooth things over. Offending Nelly meant offending the whole Watson family, and if that happened, she’d probably end up kicked out of the Garland family for good. Of course, what she feared most happened even faster than she expected. Before Brody and Nelly ever made their relationship public, Brody had already found Tina and sent her back to his father.

It was actually the first time Brody had visited his own father since taking over Garland Inc. His dad, Jason, had been bedridden for years but was still well cared for, to the point where he didn't really need Tina around anymore. Jason had seen the news and thought everything was fine, so he didn’t expect Brody to show up with Tina just to confront them.

Back when Brody was a kid, Tina was young, beautiful, and knew exactly how to please people. Not even two weeks after Brody’s mom passed away, Jason married Tina. After that, Brody barely spoke to his father. Jason just wasn’t the warm and fuzzy type. Part of the reason Brody seemed so distant was because he’d gotten sick as a kid, lost his mom too early, and never really recovered emotionally. The rest was just Jason’s personality rubbing off on him. So, the fact that they hardly talked never seemed weird to either one of them.
