Madeline nodded. Brenda had been juggling everything at the company, running around non-stop. Letting her leave early was nothing, honestly, Madeline would have given her a whole week off if she’d asked. So she just agreed on the spot.
The office quieted down, letting Madeline dive into her work for the day.
Luke was a ghost, perfectly silent standing there. He didn’t say a word or make a move, almost disappearing into the background so he wouldn’t disturb her.
Later in the afternoon, with her work wrapped up, Madeline went to pick up Noah and Oliver from school. After that, they swung by the supermarket to grab a few groceries. She was in the mood to cook and make something special for the kids.
With Claire’s scheming always in the back of her mind, Madeline and Julian both insisted on handling drop-offs and pick-ups themselves. Just in case.
“Mommy, I think Daddy’s home,” Noah said as soon as they stepped into the living room.
Oliver’s eyes widened when he spotted Miles waiting there.
“Hi, Miles,” they said together, all polite and sweet.
“Good afternoon.” Miles gave a little bow.
Madeline lifted her brow. “Miles, Julian’s already back?”
Miles nodded. “Hr has a dinner tonight. Private room at Golden Glow with Josh Brady and some other regulars from his circle, so he wanted to come home a bit early.”
Madeline’s eyes flickered for a moment. Did she really need a full rundown, every name and place? Still, she kept her thoughts to herself.
Julian came down the stairs right then. His eyes landed on her face, and his expression softened. “Welcome home.”
“Yeah. Miles told me you’ve got a dinner tonight.”
Julian glanced at the bags in her hand. “What’s all this?”
She handed them to a maid. “Haven’t cooked in a while. Thought I’d spoil the kids with their favorites. Are you heading out already?”
“I’m not going anymore.” Julian started to shrug off his jacket.
