At dinner time, a servant came upstairs and politely let them know the meal was ready.
Madeline reached the top of the stairs just as she bumped into the Monroe family. All four of them. Because of Claire, they were still living at the Ballard estate. No one minded. The Ballards had more than enough to go around, and with Claire calling herself Ms. Ballard, letting a few more people stay was barely a blip on anyone’s radar.
The Monroes’ eyes landed on Madeline. They recognized her right away, probably because Julian was at her side.
Madeline met Grandma Monroe’s eyes without even blinking. She didn’t bother acting cold or distant. Instead, she gave her a warm smile and greeted her, “Grandma Monroe.”
Her tone was so natural, so polite, that it threw Grandma Monroe off completely. The old lady looked uncomfortable and almost awkward, like she had no idea how to respond. Her gaze flickered and she looked away, maybe feeling a touch of guilt for the way she’d treated Madeline before.
Before Grandma Monroe could say anything, Raine, who had been soaking up the good life for two days, gave Madeline a frosty glare. She already knew the whole story, thanks to Drew and Grandma Monroe. The truth was that Madeline was the real Ms. Ballard, and the other one was just a fake.
But the fake had showered the Monroes with wealth, letting Raine live a life she’d only ever dreamed of. Madeline’s return threatened to rip all that away, to expose the truth and kick them out of the Ballard mansion. There was no way Raine would let that happen. She loved every minute of this life.
No wonder Raine’s hostility toward Madeline burned even brighter now.
Madeline caught her glare. She raised an eyebrow, almost amused. So there was someone else itching for trouble. Raine was never one to keep quiet.
Madeline smiled, a little resigned. People were like gamblers. Before they made a move, they always thought they’d come out on top.
In this house, everyone had their eyes on the money. Everyone wanted a slice of the pie. Everyone wanted to be the last one standing. Who would actually win in the end? That was anyone’s guess.
Madeline had no plans to get tangled up in their drama. With Julian by her side, they wouldn’t try anything.
“Let’s go,” she said to Julian, and the two of them headed downstairs together.
As they walked, Julian glanced at her. “How does it feel?”
Madeline lifted a brow. “Too many outsiders have wormed their way into the Ballard family. It’s time to clean house.”
Julian smiled, the corner of his mouth quirking up. “Definitely.”
