“Where’s Grandma?” Madeline kept her tone flat, not wanting to get into it with Raine.

She knew Raine had just been Helene’s pawn, taking the blame for things she didn’t do. But even so, Raine had still wanted to hurt her kids. She’d let herself be used, and she hadn’t exactly been innocent.

Madeline had no patience for her now. As long as Raine stayed out of her way, she’d pretend she wasn’t even there.

Raine just stared, looking lost, then pointed upstairs. “Grandma’s… upstairs.”

Without another glance, Madeline walked past her and headed for the stairs. The moment she disappeared from view, Raine grabbed her phone and quickly called Drew and Kate. “Dad, you won’t believe it. Madeline’s not dead…”

Madeline reached the door to her grandmother’s room and knocked gently.

She only went in once she heard her grandmother’s soft voice. “Come in.”

Grandma Monroe sat in a recliner by the big window, reading glasses perched on her nose, knitting something with slow, steady hands. Sunlight spilled across her, wrapping her in a gentle, golden haze.

She looked up. When her eyes landed on Madeline, her fingers stopped moving. She sat up, eyes wide with shock. “Madeline?”

Madeline walked over, her voice soft. “Grandma.”

Her grandmother was so overwhelmed she almost stood up. “Madeline, is that really you?”

“Something happened a couple of months ago. I’m sorry I made you worry.”

Her grandmother reached out and stroked Madeline’s cheek, her touch tender. “I’m just glad you’re all right. That’s what matters.”

Madeline smiled, gentle and reassuring. “I wanted to see you, but there’s something else too.”

She never liked to beat around the bush, so she just said it.

“Before Mom passed away, she left you a moon-shaped pendant and asked you to give it to me when I got married. But you didn’t give it to me then. I think it must be important. I suddenly thought of it today and wanted to ask if you still have it. I’d like to take it with me.”
