“Just giving your money back,” Julian said, his tone calm.
Casey arched an eyebrow. “So you’ve been digging into my business.”
Julian glanced up at him. “Just a guess.”
For the last couple of months, Julian hadn’t stopped doubting Casey for a second. He kept his eyes on him and, of course, he noticed that massive transfer out of Casey’s account.
Two billion wasn’t pocket change. That was enough to buy a mansion or just about anything you could dream up. But the money was gone, and there was nothing new listed under Casey’s name. No new properties, no flashy cars, nothing. Whatever he bought, no one could tell.
It happened right around the time Madeline disappeared. She’d said she’d been poisoned, and not with something ordinary. That, plus the timing, made Julian pretty sure the money had gone toward saving her.
If it was for Madeline, then he had to pay Casey back.
Casey let out a dry, almost amused snort, dropping the check onto the table with a flick of his fingers. “And what makes you think you should be the one returning her money?”
“I’m her husband,” Julian answered, steady and unwavering.
Casey sat up straighter, almost grinning. “Wrong answer.”
He got to his feet, ready to leave.
Julian’s voice was cool but determined as it drifted through the quiet room. “I was before, and I will be again.”
Casey’s lips curled in a half-smile. “You’re really something.”
“Just take it.”
Julian added, “If she ever finds out you spent that much money on her, she’d probably sell her house, her car, even her company, just to pay you back.”
That was exactly who Madeline was. She’d once tried to wire Julian money just for borrowing a few of his men, and then he’d blocked her. To Casey, two billion was just a string of numbers. He didn’t care. But to Madeline, that much money would feel like a weight she couldn’t shake. She’d really go as far as selling everything she owned if she thought she owed him. To her, a friend spending that much on her was simply too much.
