Too Late, Mr. Cooper: Your Bride Ran with Your Baby novel Chapter 47

The plot twist was so unexpected it was like a slap in the face to the gossiping onlookers. It stung.

The middle-aged man's face turned red. He stammered for a moment before muttering a sheepish, "S-sorry."

A strange silence fell over the crowd.

The chaos-enjoyers, always ready to switch allegiances, quickly turned their focus to Isabella, their whispers now directed at her.

"So she's the other woman. She looks so gentle and pretty, too. Of all the things to be, she chose to be a mistress."

"And making her kid call the man 'Daddy'? It couldn't be more obvious what she's trying to do. The fiancée must feel awful, having to hear another woman's child call her fiancé 'Dad'!"

"Shameless! If I were her, I'd have slapped the mistress. And the man would've gotten two slaps!"

Isabella had a thin skin. Having been the cherished darling of her social circle her whole life, she couldn't stand such talk. Her face flushed, and she began to cry, tears streaming down her cheeks, a picture of tragic grievance. "Liliana, I know you've always hated me, but you can't just make things up like this! How is this any different from spreading rumors?"

"Your reputation is important, but what about mine? If this gets out, how are Logan and I supposed to face anyone?!"

Isabella sobbed, gasping for breath, looking as if she might faint at any moment. In a fit of pique, she reached for the wailing Logan in Linton's arms. "Fine, I'll go!" she cried. "I'll leave! Logan and I are just a poor widow and her orphan son, we deserve to be bullied! We'll go, are you satisfied now?!"

"Now you're playing the victim," Liliana said with a cool laugh, unfazed by the performance. "Which part of what I said wasn't the truth? Slandering you? You're not important enough."

"Liliana!"

Linton's brow furrowed, his expression turning to ice. He held Logan tighter and turned to comfort Isabella. "Don't cry. I'll apologize to you on Liliana's behalf."
