Alexander immediately put down his fork and gently patted her back. “What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?”
“The smell of that beef is too rich, it’s making me sick…” Lorie’s voice was laced with grievance as she glanced at the dishes on the table with a touch of spoiled petulance. “Who ordered this? Don’t they know I’m pregnant and can’t stand the smell of greasy food?”
Having been doted on by her family her whole life, she was accustomed to getting her way. Now, in front of Danielle and Gian, she made no effort to hide her princess-like temper.
Alexander frowned and looked up at the waiter. “Please take this dish away.”
“Hold on,” Gian spoke up suddenly, his voice calm but carrying an undeniable authority. “Danielle enjoys this dish. If Miss Gaylord doesn’t like the smell, she can move a little farther away. There’s no need for everyone else to make concessions for one person’s tastes.”
Lorie’s look of distress froze, and her face hardened as she shot Gian a glare filled with resentment. “I’m pregnant. Pregnant women are supposed to be looked after. Don’t you have any consideration?”
“Pregnancy is a joyous occasion, not an excuse to make things difficult for others,” Gian said, setting down his fork. He leaned forward slightly, his eyes on Lorie, a faint smile on his lips. “If you’re so sensitive to rich smells, you should be resting at home, not attending social dinners. When you eat out, you can’t expect everyone to cater to your palate. Surely Miss Gaylord understands that.”
He paused, then turned to the silent Alexander, his tone tinged with a mix of amusement and ridicule. “Mr. Davidson, this isn’t your first time becoming a father, is it? How could you be so thoughtless? Knowing Miss Gaylord is sensitive to these smells, you should have chosen a restaurant with a lighter menu or paid more attention when ordering. Now you’ve made everyone uncomfortable. It’s all so unnecessary.”
