The snow slowly melted, sending up wisps of steam.

The temperature inside the cave gradually rose, and a welcome warmth enveloped them, temporarily shutting out the storm.

As the water heated, Danielle gently took Alexander's hand and submerged it in the warm liquid.

The tips of his fingers had started to turn black from the frostbite, and the heat sent a sharp, stabbing pain through them. He merely winced, not making a sound.

“We’re low on firewood.”

Danielle spoke softly as she gently cleaned the wounds on his hand with a clean strip of cloth, her eyes glancing at the dwindling pile of branches.

“We need to find a way to contact the outside world… And I hope this blizzard stops soon.”

Alexander didn’t speak. He just watched her lowered gaze, the way she carefully tended to his injury.

The fire cast flickering shadows on her face, softening the stubborn lines of her profile.

He suddenly thought that perhaps this desperate situation wasn't entirely a bad thing.

The blizzard howled on, seemingly without end.

The orange flames gradually weakened until the last of the branches burned down, leaving only a pile of dark red embers.

Leaning against the rock wall, Danielle felt her consciousness begin to fade. Her cheeks were alarmingly hot.

She curled into a ball and started to shiver, her thin shoulders trembling as her breathing grew rapid.

Alexander was the first to notice something was wrong. He reached out and touched her forehead. The searing heat he felt made his heart sink.

He quickly unzipped the insulated lining of his own jacket, wrapped it around Danielle, and pulled her closer into his arms, trying to use his body heat to warm her icy hands and feet.

“Danielle? Danielle, wake up.”
