The Wife You Buried Is Back from Hell novel Chapter 258

“Yeah.” Gian pressed his fingers to his brow, wincing at the pain. “Something came up last minute. I had to leave.”

Danielle’s grip tightened on the mug of hangover remedy she was carrying. Her eyes looked a little lost, her mind swirling with tangled thoughts. She forced herself to focus, to clear her head.

“So, um, how did the meeting go? Are they interested in working with us?”

Gian nodded. “It’s looking good. I’ll stop by their office again tomorrow to follow up.”

Danielle had drunk far more than usual tonight, and now her whole body felt out of sorts—her limbs heavy, her head even heavier, as if it were filled with lead and every thought was slow to surface.

Gian called a car service and made sure she got home safely. By the time he returned, it was only eight-thirty in the evening.

Niki noticed her mom reeked of alcohol, her face drawn with discomfort. The words she wanted to say caught in her throat.

Instead, she hurried over. “Mom…” Niki hovered beside the sofa. “Let me run you a bath.”

Danielle propped herself up on her elbows, sitting forward with effort. She reached out and ruffled Niki’s hair. “Thank you, sweetheart.”

Niki dashed off to the bathroom to start the hot water, then went to the linen closet for pajamas.

She glanced at Danielle, her small face etched with worry. “Do you want me to help you wash up?”

Danielle had once been used to nights like these—drinking for Alexander’s work dinners, coming home late, Niki waiting up for her. Since moving out, there’d been fewer of these scenes. And yet, here they were again.

Niki, so young, had learned to be mature beyond her years.

Danielle glanced at the clock hanging above the mantel.

Her voice was soft. “Honey, don’t worry about me. You go get some sleep, okay?”
