As he spoke, his gaze flicked over Danielle before settling on Alexander. "You're buying it for Millie?"
Alexander's expression didn't change; he replied in his usual unhurried tone, "Yes."
He tilted his head toward Millie. "Whatever you like, just pick it out."
For Millie, he was willing to do anything to make her happy, consequences be damned. Whether something belonged to her or not, Alexander could always find a way to put it in her hands.
Keegan announced Matilda's name. Alexander knew full well this was Danielle's grandmother's work—a keepsake, practically a family relic.
Yet he didn't hesitate to take it away, as if Danielle's feelings were invisible.
"Thank you, Alex." Millie smiled, her face glowing with the sweetness of being doted on.
Then she glanced at Danielle. "I'm sorry for swooping in and taking what you wanted, but I guess that's how auctions work—the highest bidder wins."
Keegan cast Danielle a discreet look. "Apologies, Miss Crawford."
His words settled the matter. The vase would go to Alexander.
Liam chimed in, "Like you could ever compete with her. You two aren't even in the same league."
To him, the earlier conversation between Millie and Danielle about who saw the vase first had always been pointless.
"Miss Crawford, women who scheme their way up never amount to anything. Even if you spend your life chained to the stove, you'll never win a man's heart."
"Alex isn't superficial. You know exactly what you are."
Every word was a barb aimed at Danielle.
Back then, she'd used underhanded tricks to get into Alex's bed, destroying what could have been a perfect marriage between him and Millie. Now the rightful woman was back, and Danielle still clung to her place, refusing to let go.
She couldn't even hold a candle to Millie.
Millie had just returned from studying abroad with dual doctorates, an accomplished woman in every sense—a shining example of the modern, independent woman.
Danielle, with her petty schemes, couldn't compare. There was simply no contest.
