However, Gloria's attitude toward Leilani after Yvonne's accident had left her feeling deeply chilled. Though Leilani tried not to care about the harsh, humiliating remarks Gloria had thrown her way, her subconscious had etched them into her memory. Even though Leilani no longer cared about Gloria's opinions, she still didn't want to forgive her.
Leilani remained silent for a long time—so long that Yvonne almost thought she wasn't going to respond at all. Finally, she gave a faint "Mm."
There was no anger, no sarcasm. But there was no forgiveness, either.
Yvonne's heart sank. She knew that Leilani's reaction spoke volumes.
Leilani simply couldn't forgive Gloria for the pain she had caused, and she no longer cared about Gloria's apologies.
Yvonne saw this clearly, but she couldn't help feeling a wave of disappointment. After all, Gloria had hurled those vicious insults at Leilani solely because of her. She knew those words had cut Leilani deeply, so expecting her to let bygones be bygones and forgive her mother was practically impossible.
Sensing the heavy shift in the atmosphere, Judie quickly stepped in to smooth things over. "Oh, let the past stay in the past! We came out today to have fun. No more depressing talk!"
Yvonne forced a smile and nodded along. "Right. No more."
Still, her eyes kept drifting back to Leilani, an ache settling in her chest. She knew exactly how much Leilani had trusted Gloria. Back when the Sloan family had completely abandoned Leilani, Gloria had offered her warmth, making Leilani feel like she finally had a maternal figure she could rely on.
But what happened after that? When Yvonne got hurt and Leilani was framed, Gloria hadn't hesitated to side with the Sloans. With ultimate coldness, she had personally severed that bond of trust. How could a flimsy "I'm sorry" possibly make up for all that damage?
Yvonne looked down and stirred her cold coffee, feeling sad and helpless. She understood Leilani's stance. Yet, deep down, she still wished Leilani could forgive her mother, even just a little.
