In the interrogation room.
Two detectives sat across the table, the case files spread out in front of them, the red light of an audio recorder blinking steadily.
"Owen claims you were the first person to give him this drug."
Margot leaned back in her chair, tilting her head as she looked at the detectives, then at the toxicology report on the table.
A faint smirk played on her lips.
"Just because he says it, makes it true? I have a hospital prescription. I take those pills practically every day. I wouldn't survive without them."
The detective asked, "Then how do you explain Owen possessing the exact same medication?"
"I was trying to take my medicine, and he lunged at me like a rabid dog to snatch it from my hands." Margot frowned slightly. "I'm a chronically ill woman. How was I supposed to stop him?"
The detective pressed on, "Why would he steal your medication?"
"How should I know? Maybe he's a psycho." Margot scoffed. "Officer, is it a crime to have your own medication stolen from you?"
"Margot, don't push your luck. If you can't provide a reasonable explanation, we have more than enough grounds to charge you based on his testimony and the fact that you burn through your prescriptions much faster than your doctor ordered."
Margot shrugged, entirely unbothered.
"Then investigate me. In fact, lock me up, throw me behind bars, and give me a life sentence."
The harsh fluorescent lights glared from above, making Margot's already pale face look completely bloodless.
The vice-captain sighed and closed the file.
The batch numbers on Owen's pills were badly scratched, and Margot's legally prescribed volume was so large that there wasn't any ironclad proof to tie her exclusively to his supply.
"Margot, your time for questioning is up. Until this case is fully resolved, you are not permitted to leave Brighton City, and you must remain reachable at all times." The vice-captain kept a stern face as he slid a document across the table. "Sign here."
Margot looked down and scrawled her name.
As she walked out the front doors of the police department, she spotted a familiar car idling by the curb at the bottom of the steps.
Margot froze in her tracks.
