Rhys shoved the phone into his pocket, pushed open the fire door, and returned to the command center.

His deputy walked up to resume the briefing, but Rhys raised a hand to stop him. "Take over the afternoon meeting for me. Go with Plan B."

"Wait, Rhys, this is your first major assignment..."

"Family emergency."

He didn't offer any further explanation. He grabbed his jacket from his office and left.

Over the weekend, as new buds sprouted on the trees, Rhys and Clara took Felix to the biggest amusement park outside the city limits.

To accommodate Felix's age, they spent the whole day in the children's section.

Clara walked on the left, Rhys on the right, with Felix in the middle, holding both of their hands.

The family was stunning enough that people constantly turned their heads to look at them as they passed.

Walking past a cotton candy stand, Felix stopped and pointed at a pink one. "Mom, I want that."

Clara bought it for him.

Felix took the cotton candy and made sure his parents each took a bite before he began eating it in small, polite nibbles.

In the afternoon, they rode the miniature train and the spinning teacups. Felix chose the rides, and he waited patiently in line every single time without a fuss.

Yet sometimes he would tug on Rhys's hand and say, "If you're tired, we can go sit down over there. I don't have to ride this."

Rhys looked down at him, a heavy sigh catching in his chest.

"I'm not tired." He pinched Felix's nose. "We're out here for you today. We'll play until you want to go home. You can ride whatever you want."

"Are you really not tired?"

"I promise."

Felix finally turned back to wait in line, but he outright refused to let Rhys or Clara carry him, insisting on standing on his own two feet.

Finally, they went to the carousel.

When it was their turn, Felix picked a white horse, and Rhys stood beside him to make sure he was safe.

Clara stayed outside the fence to take photos of them.

Through the lens, Felix's eyes crinkled with joy. He waved at Clara every single time they circled past.
