The words sent a chill down Clara's spine.
That evening, Rhys arrived back at Riverside Court exactly as the clock struck the end of the workday.
Felix was already waiting in the entryway, his little chest puffed out proudly.
Rhys scooped him up into his arms. "Did you have fun at preschool today? I heard you were made the little class captain."
Felix nodded, digging around in his pocket for a long moment before pulling out a small red star sticker.
He pressed the sticker onto the chest of Rhys's shirt, patting it flat with his small palm.
"What's this?"
"My teacher gave me a reward today, and I'm giving it to you."
"Why are you giving it to me?"
"Because you went to work today and took your medicine like a good boy, so Mom didn't have to worry." Felix patted Rhys's cheek. "This is a health reward. With this, you'll get better faster."
Rhys chuckled.
By the third day of Felix's new preschool.
At half-past ten in the morning, Clara's phone buzzed on the table. It was the preschool director.
Clara instinctively assumed Felix had gotten into another fight.
"Hello, Director. Did something happen with Felix?"
The director's tone lacked its usual warmth. "Clara, do you have time to come by the school right now? The child is fine, but our school's behavioral counselor, Sophia, would like to speak with you in person regarding Felix."
Clara's heart sank.
The behavioral counselor?
Felix was so well-behaved and sensible. Had he done something wrong these past few days? He came home smiling every afternoon, voluntarily shared funny stories about school, and always said goodnight before bed.
Everything seemed perfectly normal.
Why would the counselor need to see him?
"Alright, I'll be right there."
She hung up and rushed out the door without even grabbing her coat.
Inside the counselor's office sat the director and a blonde, blue-eyed woman in her thirties. Her ID badge read: Sophia.
"Please, have a seat," the director said, sliding a glass of warm water toward her. "This is Sophia. She's in charge of the children's behavioral and psychological evaluations."
Clara sat down, her palms slick with sweat. "What exactly is going on?"
Sophia pushed a stack of drawings across the desk.
"These were drawn by Felix during our weekly art therapy session," the director explained.
Clara looked down at the pictures.
The first showed a figure lying inside a square box, with a tiny, tiny figure standing outside of it.
The tiny figure had no mouth.
The second drawing depicted a large black shield covering a big figure and a small figure, with the space outside the shield covered in red crosses.
