The Officer's Runaway Wife and Secret Son novel Chapter 531

At 5:25 p.m., Rhys glanced at the time in the bottom right corner of his computer screen, hit the enter key one last time to save the file, and shut down the machine.

At exactly 5:30 p.m., he grabbed his jacket from the coat rack and walked out of his office right on the dot.

A few colleagues in the hallway, heading to the cafeteria for dinner, froze in surprise when they saw him.

The pace at the command center was entirely different from the SWAT team.

People here were used to packing up slowly after six. Some of the older officers even stuck around until past seven, leaving only after grabbing dinner.

For the newly appointed director to bolt the second the shift ended on his very first day was a bit out of the ordinary.

"Director Huntington, your timing is impeccable."

Rhys didn't even break his stride. "I'm a married man now."

The group watched him hurry off. Two single officers exchanged glances, taking a moment to process the flex.

Who even asked him?

Traffic was a bit heavy on the drive home. Rhys stared at the red light ahead, calculating the time in his head.

As he passed a flower shop, he pulled over.

He had been a frequent customer here lately. The owner, a woman in her forties, smiled the moment he pushed the door open. "Sunflowers again? We just got a fresh batch today, and the colors are stunning."

"Yes, please. And I'd like a bouquet of lisianthus as well."

Rhys had learned a lot about the language of flowers recently, mostly from the owner.

Sunflowers stood for unspoken devotion, lisianthus for unwavering affection, and baby's breath for a love willing to stay in the background.

Because of that, he never bought baby's breath.

He had no intention of being in the background.

The owner wrapped the bouquet, slipping in a few sprigs of eucalyptus.

"You usually just buy the blooms, so I'm throwing in some eucalyptus to balance it out. It looks gorgeous."

Rhys thanked her, a sudden thought flashing through his mind.

What did eucalyptus symbolize? He would have to look that up later.

If the meaning was bad, he wouldn't bring it home tomorrow. If it was good, he would buy more.

Holding the freshly wrapped flowers, Rhys opened the door to their home at Riverside Court.

Cartoons were playing on the TV, and Felix was reading a book.

"You're back?" Clara peeked out from the kitchen, still holding a soup ladle.

Before Rhys could answer, Felix dropped his book and ran over.
