Clara let out a sigh.
"It means that his temper has mellowed out, and he knows how to hold back now. But me? I've always had a terrible temper."
Before the last word even left her lips, and just as Owen opened his mouth to reply, Clara bypassed the small talk and went straight for a more primitive form of communication.
She raised her right hand. The movement wasn't blazing fast, but the trajectory was incredibly direct and brutally clean.
She planted a solid, bone-rattling punch squarely on Owen's right cheek.
Owen had zero defenses up. The glass in his hand shattered on the floor as he slid off the sofa in a heap, taking the fruit platter down with him.
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
The trust-fund kids who had just been sitting on the sidelines watching the drama unfold all shot to their feet.
They stared in utter shock at Owen sprawled on the ground, then turned their wide eyes to Clara, who was standing there calmly with her arm dropped back to her side.
No one had expected this woman to get physical. And even if she did, it should have been a tossed drink or a slap to the face. Not a straight right hook.
It sounded like it hurt like hell.
It took Owen several seconds of lying on the floor to register what had just happened.
He spat out a mouthful of blood-tinged saliva and scrambled up, ready to strike back.
"Are you out of your fucking mind?!"
Shawn and the others were terrified. They rushed over and pinned him down, terrified he might actually do something crazy.
Are you kidding me? If Owen so much as laid a finger on Clara in here, the man standing out in the hallway would absolutely tear the place apart.
"Owen, calm the hell down and shut your mouth! Stop making things worse!"
Pinned down by Shawn and unable to move, Owen yelled in sheer frustration, "Why didn't you tell her to calm down when she hit me? Clara, he threw you aside to play knight in shining armor for Margot, and you're still sticking your neck out for him? Have you got no self-respect?!"
"The past is the past, and now is now."
