The Officer's Runaway Wife and Secret Son novel Chapter 550

"I understand. Freeze the cards whenever you need to, and if you have to seal up the house, I won't say a word. I'll be right here at the hospital for the next few days. I won't go anywhere. As long as my daughter pulls through, I'll do anything you ask."

The agent simply nodded, leaving it at that.

As a stepson, Rhys inevitably found himself called in for questioning as well.

He sat with perfect posture on the sofa across from two senior investigators.

"Director Huntington, we didn't bring you in for an interrogation. This is just an internal verification."

The lead investigator's tone was deeply respectful. "We spent the entire night verifying these files. From the Southside land bid twelve years ago to the municipal contract embezzlements from just a few months ago, the chain of evidence is practically airtight."

He tapped his fingers on the heavy folder. "To be honest, we've been investigating Eric for months without finding a fatal flaw. If it weren't for this dossier and Chief Sean's corroboration, we would never have been able to arrest him right in the middle of the conference."

Rhys gave a slight nod. "I simply compiled what I've seen and uncovered over the years."

The investigator flipped open the file, his eyes landing on pages crammed with wire transfers and damning audio transcripts.

Securing this kind of evidence was notoriously difficult. Getting ahold of the offshore accounts and the core project approvals wasn't something done overnight.

"But yanking up a weed pulls up all the dirt with it. There are a lot of dangerous players tied up in this."

"Yes," Rhys said evenly. "Eric was my mother's second husband. Thanks to that connection, I had access to peripheral information that others didn't. He crossed the line of no return a long time ago. The law comes before family. As an officer, I couldn't just stand by."

In front of Eric and Veronica, he had always played the part of the compliant pawn, bound by guilt and a sense of duty.

He had watched them trade power for cash, hosting lavish banquets in their high-rise penthouses, while he quietly stripped back and archived every piece of criminal evidence they believed to be flawless.

He never picked sides and never took a single cent from the Johnson family's dividends. He had scrubbed his hands clean ages ago, biding his time for the perfect strike.

The second investigator looked at Rhys, unable to hold back his curiosity.

"Director Huntington, were you ever afraid of retaliation when you turned him in? From what we know, Eric's power in Brighton City runs incredibly deep. Did anyone threaten you before you handed this over?"
