“But you’re on leave right now,” Clara said. “Can you really spare the manpower to track someone’s personal movements without any concrete evidence? Isn’t that…”
She didn’t finish the thought, not wanting to say the words “abuse of power.” After all, even if he weren’t on leave or reassigned, this kind of investigation was outside the scope of his position.
Rhys gently stroked the back of her hand. “Don’t worry. Some things were already under investigation. Keeping an eye on one person is just a small, extra step. It’s all by the book.”
Clara didn’t press him further. When it came to toeing the line while staying within the rules, he knew the boundaries better than she did.
Glancing at the wall clock, she picked up her phone. “It’s about time. Felix has been waiting for this call. It should be nine in the morning over there, so we probably won’t be bothering him.”
On the carpet, the base of the model train was already assembled. Felix, holding a small gear, looked up. “Mommy, are we calling Daddy Noah?”
“Go ahead.” She handed the phone to Felix and tapped the video call icon.
In the few seconds it took for the call to connect, Rhys’s expression shifted. “I’m going to go cut up some fruit,” he said, turning toward the kitchen.
The screen lit up, and Noah’s face appeared. He was wearing glasses and pajamas, clearly still at home.
“Daddy Noah!” Felix exclaimed, holding the phone up high, right in front of his face.
“Felix, did you get the present?” Noah’s voice, gentle and clear as ever, traveled across the thousands of miles between them.
“I did! It’s a huge train!” He flipped the camera to show the base on the carpet. “I built this myself. Just now… I was building it for a long time!”
The little boy cleverly omitted the fact that his dad had helped, likely trying to be sensitive to everyone’s feelings.
Noah laughed on the other end. “You’re amazing, Felix. If you run into any tricky parts, you can ask your mom and dad for help.” His gaze drifted past Felix to Clara, who was partially in the frame. “Clara.”
“Noah. Are you settling in okay over there?” Clara gently nudged the phone back toward Felix to ensure the camera captured him fully, maintaining a polite and friendly distance for herself.
