“Happy New Year, Uncle,” Clara responded politely.
From the other sofa came the soft babbling of a child. Liam and his wife, Wendy Murray, were sitting there. Wendy held a little girl in her arms, and a little boy sat beside them.
“Clara, you’re finally here,” Wendy said, walking over with her daughter. “We were just saying we had to visit you and Felix after Rhys was done with his business.”
Clara’s eyes softened as she looked at the cherubic little girl in Wendy’s arms, reaching out to gently tickle her chin. “Happy New Year, Liam, Wendy. Is this Nellie or Mateo?”
“This is Nellie. The boy is Mateo,” Wendy said, leaning down to coax her daughter. “Nellie, say ‘Auntie.’”
Nellie chewed on her fingers, staring at Clara with wide, curious eyes. “Aun… tie,” the little girl managed to lisp.
Clara’s heart melted.
Mateo scrambled off the sofa and toddled over to Rhys, hugging his leg. “Up,” he demanded, holding up his little arms to Rhys.
Rhys bent down and lifted his nephew into his arms. “Not afraid of me today, Mateo?”
The scene was so warm and harmonious. For the first time, Clara felt a truly relaxed atmosphere in this house. The Huntington family, despite its web of conflicting interests and distant relatives, also had these moments of genuine warmth.
The lawyer, after organizing his files, reluctantly interrupted. “Mr. Huntington, these documents require your final confirmation and signature.”
With Mateo in his arms, it was awkward for Rhys to sign. Clara naturally reached out and took the little boy. “I’ll hold him. You go take care of your business.” Mateo showed no shyness, readily snuggling into Clara’s embrace.
Rhys nodded and walked to the table to begin reviewing and signing the documents.
Wendy pulled Clara down to sit on the sofa. As mothers, their conversation naturally turned to children. She hadn’t met Felix yet, but her mother-in-law had told her he looked just like Rhys and was incredibly smart and well-behaved, making her immensely curious. The two young mothers chatted animatedly about everything from their children’s clothes to their eating habits.
Mia listened in while sipping her tea, occasionally adding a comment. “When the weather gets warmer, our whole family should find some time to go on an outing.”
