Margot's words didn't even make Rhys flinch.
He shot back, "So what?"
He couldn't care less if Clara was pitying him.
Right now, his mind was completely occupied with learning how to be a stable husband and a father his son could be proud of.
Just figuring out how to win over the four-year-old, how to stop the little rascal from constantly calling his rival, was enough to consume all his energy.
As long as Clara was willing to keep him around, he felt that even giving his life for her wouldn't be enough.
He had no time to worry about whether her pity was real or fake.
Mia and a few of the shareholders heard the commotion and turned to look.
Eric frowned slightly and shot Veronica West a discreet glance. He hated it when people stirred up trouble at critical moments.
Veronica West got the message.
She quickly stepped between them and said with concern, "Margot, you're not well. It's cold out here. Why don't you go wait downstairs?"
She grabbed Margot's wrist, her grip firm.
Margot let herself be pulled back a step, then turned to give Rhys a smiling wave before leaving with Veronica West.
Rhys glanced at her smile for a second before looking away, his gaze returning to the doors of the emergency room.
There was no one else in the underground parking garage.
The driver, knowing his place, had already moved to smoke behind a pillar.
Veronica West pulled open the rear car door, half-shoving, half-guiding Margot inside before getting in herself.
"What was that all about today?"
Her earlier tone of concern was gone, replaced by a frown. "Don't you know what your father's position is right now? With so many eyes on us, what were you thinking, saying all that?"
Margot leaned against the seat, clutching her chest and gasping for air. Her heart was pounding, and a throbbing started in her temples.
She laughed. "Didn't you see the look on his face?"
Veronica West's expression soured. "I don't care what he looked like. Your father's position is sensitive right now. If any unpleasant rumors start spreading, it'll be bad for both of us."
