Rhys listened quietly.
As she spoke, her thoughts were clear, her tone calm.
A continuous, dull ache spread through Rhys’s heart.
In the past, whenever Clara encountered anything related to Margot, whether it was hurt or simple anger, she would always lose control of her emotions.
Now, she had shed her thorns, calmly laying out the facts for him to analyze.
This was the kind of communication he had once longed for.
During their years together, he had wished countless times for Clara to be less emotional and more rational.
But now that Clara had truly become this way, he felt an unbearable sadness.
Because this rationality and composure weren't innate. They were bought with the pain he'd caused her and the countless nights she'd spent swallowing her tears alone.
She no longer needed to test his feelings with her emotions, no longer hoped he would give her his unconditional devotion.
She just presented the facts, leaving him to solve the problem.
“I know,” Rhys nodded, his expression serious. “I’ll look into it, and I’ll keep an eye on Margot. Don’t worry, I won’t let them get near you or Felix.”
The sky outside was just beginning to show a faint, grayish blue.
Hearing Rhys’s assurance, Clara’s anxious heart settled a little.
She had always trusted his ability to handle external threats.
After staying up all night, she was exhausted. The matter was discussed, the sense of crisis was shared, and it was time for her to rest.
She folded the blanket on her lap, placed it aside, and stood up.
“That’s good. I’m going to bed. You should rest soon after your hair dries. Felix will definitely be clinging to you tomorrow, so you need to save your energy.”
She had just taken a step when Rhys grabbed her.
She looked down at the hand holding her wrist, then followed his arm up to meet his gaze.
Rhys sat on the sofa, looking up at her slightly.
From this angle, he was completely in a subordinate position.
Clara suddenly realized that since their reunion, she seemed to be looking at him from this angle quite often.
He was no longer the high-and-mighty Captain Huntington who made all her decisions without explaining anything.
