“Baby...”
That one word was drawn out, low and tempting. The moment she heard it, Emily stiffened, her heart thudding wildly in her chest.
She’d never been able to stand up against Kenneth, and certainly not when he turned up the charm on purpose.
“It’s barely been any time at all...” Emily looked down, lashes sweeping over her cheeks as she tried to get her feelings under control. She muttered, “You’re the most relentless guy I’ve ever met. No one chases a girl like this.”
“Well, now someone does,” Kenneth replied, his lips quirking in a smile. He hugged her tighter, eyes locked on her soft, rosy mouth, his voice rough. “Emily, my arm really hurts.”
“Should you take another painkiller?” Emily grabbed the pills and started reading the instructions. “It says you can’t have too many.”
She was so focused on the label, she didn’t even notice Kenneth inching closer.
“Charlotte said she’s got some medicine we could use. Later...” Emily tipped her chin up, right as Kenneth’s gaze met hers, dark and deep, like he could pull her whole soul under.
“What are you doing?” she asked, shifting awkwardly as his arm still kept her close. Her face was flushed, suddenly uncertain.
“Emily...” Kenneth leaned forward, voice so raw and low it made the tiny hairs at her neck stand up. “I want to kiss you.”
His face was right there, almost touching hers, his breath warm against her skin. Emily froze up completely.
“I’m kidding.” Kenneth let out a quiet sigh, then chuckled, soft and rough all at once. “Relax, I’m not that animal.” He would never push her, not if she wasn’t ready.
Something in Emily’s heart softened. She nudged him away and stood up.
“You should rest. I want to go change.”
Just as she started to walk off, Kenneth grabbed her hand, his expression suddenly all puppy-dog eyes. “I’ll wait for you to come back. If you don’t, I’m not leaving.”
