"This..."
Galen's heart skipped a beat as he instinctively checked Franco's reaction.
The "he" Petty was talking about was obviously Franco.
Having just survived a near-death experience, based on what Galen knew about Petty, even if she hated Franco for everything he'd done in the past, she wouldn't normally say something so profoundly vindictive.
What Franco had done was terrible, sure, but in Galen's eyes, it didn't warrant this level of absolute hatred.
What had gone wrong?
He turned his head and saw Franco's features had completely hardened, his eyes rimmed with red.
Any normal guy hearing the woman he loved say something so heartless would look shattered or defensive, but Franco looked like he was experiencing something far worse than a broken heart.
Galen had grown up with him and had never seen an expression like that on his face. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, Franco's expression shifted, settling into a chilling, detached stoicism.
He was back to his usual unreadable self!
Thinking about Franco and Petty's relationship gave Galen a massive headache.
In the past, he figured he shouldn't interfere with Franco's love life. But now that he knew his nephew, Manley, was still alive, he had to think about the kid!
"Look."
He tapped the back of the wheelchair.
"Sit in the chair, and I'll push you in. When you're in front of her, keep your voice low. Sound like you're barely hanging on. Throw in a few subtle winces or a weak cough, let her see how fragile you are so she feels bad for you..."
But Franco didn't wait for him to finish. Or maybe he just wasn't listening at all. He pushed open the slightly ajar door and walked right in.
"No, seriously, listen to me..."
Galen pushed the empty wheelchair and followed him in. Playing the sympathy card right now was absolutely the right move, especially since Franco was genuinely severely injured. He had almost died that morning.
It had taken hours for him to finally wake up, and he had dragged himself here on sheer willpower just to see Petty. Yet, he was trying to act completely fine in front of her.
