A faint smile seemed to grace Hayes's lips, and his expression grew visibly more serene.
Worried that leaning over the bed would strain Vivica, Joseph quickly pulled up a chair and guided her to sit.
Leaning forward in the seat, Vivica kept her gaze locked on her father. "Dad, we're all here with you. If there's a next life, our family will never be apart again."
On the other side of the bed, Hillary rested her hands gently on her husband's arm. "Hayes, go in peace. Go find our son. The two of you can wait for me. I know it won't be long before I join you both."
Hillary spoke with a calm acceptance of her own failing health. Even if she managed to get a kidney transplant, it would only buy her a few more years. Living to a ripe old age was a pipe dream. She knew she wouldn't have to wait long to be reunited with her husband and son.
Vivica hadn't expected her mother to say such a thing and shot her a startled glance. The words settled uncomfortably in her chest, making her feel as though she was about to be abandoned all over again. But given the circumstances, she reasoned her mother was just trying to comfort her dying father.
Pushing aside the ache in her heart, she turned back to Hayes. She desperately wanted to offer more comfort but found herself at a loss for words. All she could do was grip his hand tighter, as if she could physically anchor his fading life to this world.
Joseph rested a warm hand on her shoulder and murmured, "Let Chaim come over. Let him say goodbye to his grandpa."
Vivica blinked, suddenly remembering her son was there. She turned around and reached out her arms. "Chaim, come here, sweetie. Say hi to Grandpa."
Joseph took the toddler from Roderic and gently set him on Vivica's lap.
Chaim was so young, yet this was already the second time he was facing the loss of a grandparent. The first had been Fletcher Sanford's father, Dylan Sanford. And now, his biological grandfather.
He seemed to understand what was happening, yet simultaneously didn't. Sitting in his mother's lap, his big, beautiful eyes filled with tears as he fought back sobs.
"Baby," Vivica whispered in his ear, "call out to Grandpa. It'll make him so happy."
