"I know."
"So… is your husband in some kind of trouble? Will he be able to handle it?" Zavier asked, his question born partly of genuine concern and partly… of selfish hope.
He had just accused his colleagues of gloating, and while he wasn't that low, a subtle, unspoken thought lurked in the back of his mind.
What if the rumors were true? What if Joseph was disgraced? Would he and Vivica still be together? If their marriage fell apart, would that give him a chance to pursue her?
But the thought barely surfaced before his own strong moral compass crushed it.
Vivica finished wiping the counter, then turned to face Zavier, cup in hand.
Instead of answering his question, she asked one of her own, completely out of the blue. "Zavier, have you been in contact with Mr. Smith lately?"
Zavier looked startled, unsure whether to say yes or no.
In fact, he had. Raymond, worried about Vivica but not wanting to bother her every day, had been getting occasional updates from Zavier. Zavier had even told him that very morning that Vivica was back at work, a clear sign her health was improving.
"Zavier, you don't have to feel awkward about it," Vivica said, seeing his hesitation. It was obvious he'd been talking to Raymond. "I'm planning to go to Sydville during the New Year's holiday. It's time to face what needs to be faced."
Reflecting on everything that had happened, she added politely, "You've been worried about me, too. Thank you for that."
"Really? That's wonderful!" Zavier's face lit up. "Mr. Smith has been so eager to finally meet you. He genuinely cares about you. And your biological parents, I'm sure they'll do everything they can to make it up to you. As for me… you don't have to thank me. I just want you to be happy."
