Vivica gave him a gentle push. “You should go. Don’t be late for your work.”
Then she turned to Roderic with a smile. “Roderic, please drive carefully and stay safe.”
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Baird. We’ll take good care of the boss,” Roderic replied, a playful glint in his eye.
Joseph, however, stood rooted to the spot, his eyes fixed on Vivica. He didn’t turn, and he didn’t speak.
Vivica glanced at him and instantly understood. Shedding her earlier shyness and not wanting to delay him further, she stepped forward, wrapped her arms around him, and stood on her toes to press a kiss to the corner of his mouth.
“I’ll miss you,” she whispered, so softly that only he could hear.
Roderic, who had tactfully turned away to give them privacy, still caught the words and smiled to himself.
Joseph turned and shot his subordinate a glare. “Let’s go!”
Roderic turned back and waved to Vivica. “We’re off, Mrs. Baird!”
“Okay, be safe.” Vivica waved back, watching them leave.
She couldn’t help but take a few more steps forward, stopping at the glass wall to watch Joseph’s tall, straight figure walk into the curtain of snow and get into the car. She stood there, mesmerized, until the car’s taillights vanished into the blizzard. After a long moment, she sighed and turned to go back upstairs.
Just as she stepped into the elevator, her phone rang. She pulled it out and saw it was an unknown number.
Curious, she answered it.
“Hello?”
