Melanie was taken aback. She turned to Vivica, her voice laced with concern. “Are you sure he genuinely wants to save Chaim? Or is he using this as an excuse to get back in your life?”
Her primary concern was protecting her daughter-in-law while her son was away on business.
Vivica understood her mother-in-law’s worry and comforted her. “Joseph left a few men here at the hospital. I’ll have them with me when I meet him, just in case.”
Vivica was no fool. After seeing Fletcher’s true colors, she would never trust him again. Even if she pitied him for losing his father, that wasn’t a reason to be naive or let her guard down. She had to be cautious.
“That’s good, then.” Melanie nodded, then her expression softened as she recalled the time they took Chaim to see Fletcher’s father in the ICU. “Although, seeing how he reacted to Chaim that day, with his eyes all red… I feel like he still cares deeply for him. He probably won’t cause any more trouble.”
“I think so too. So please, don’t worry,” Vivica said, reassuring them. She checked the time and urged them to head home and get some rest.
Later that night, after she and Chaim had washed up and settled into bed, Chaim turned to her, his big eyes blinking in the dim light.
“Mommy, is Daddy coming to see me tomorrow? I mean… my dad Fletcher.” The little boy was smart and had overheard the adults talking.
Vivica turned on her side and smiled gently at her son. “Yes, he is. Do you want to see him, sweetie?”
Chaim looked down, thinking for a moment. “As long as he doesn’t fight with you and doesn’t make you mad, then I guess it’s okay to see him.”
Listening to her three-year-old speak with the gravity of an adult, Vivica couldn’t help but chuckle. She stroked his little bald head. “He doesn’t make Mommy mad anymore. Don’t you worry, sweetie.”
