“That’s good,” Joseph said, relieved to hear her taking it in stride. “You’re right, there’s no need to rush. We’ll try again for another month. If it still doesn’t happen, we’ll go see Harvey.”
Although asking his friend for help with this was a little embarrassing, it was nothing compared to the importance of saving Chaim.
“Okay, let’s wait and see. And don’t worry, I’m fine. Chaim’s condition is stable, which buys us some time. I know what I’m doing.” She reassured him, not wanting him to worry that this would affect her work.
“Good. As long as you’re okay. If you’re not feeling well, take the day off and go home to rest. Don’t push yourself.”
“I’m not feeling unwell, actually,” Vivica said. A small thought occurred to her, and she lowered her voice. “It’s strange, I usually get cramps, but this time I barely feel anything.”
That was why, even though she could take a sick day if she needed one, she didn’t see the point.
Long ago, Quintina had told her that for some women, cramps improved after getting married or having children. She had said it had to do with balancing the body’s energies. But Quintina had also mentioned a scientific basis—the “process” could promote the secretion of certain hormones that help relieve pain, and the complete physical and mental relaxation was also healing.
Vivica was too shy to bring it up, but with Joseph’s persistent concern, she mumbled the thought aloud.
Hearing her sheepish tone, Joseph quickly understood and let out a low chuckle. “Are you saying I get the credit?”
Vivica was speechless. He understood everything!
“Uh, I have to get back to work, and I’m sure you’re busy too. Let’s hang up,” she said, unable to answer and fearing he might say something even more audacious. She quickly ended the call.
But for the rest of the day, the thought brought her spirits down whenever she remembered it.
