With no need to rush, he watched as she grabbed her bag and headed for the door, still completely oblivious. Joseph’s lips tightened in displeasure, but he held his tongue.
To his surprise, Vivica, who had already walked out the door, suddenly turned around and came back inside.
Seeing her return, Joseph asked, "Did you forget something?"
"No," she said, walking straight toward the dining table where he sat at its head.
A flash of understanding dawned on Joseph’s face as he realized what she was about to do.
Vivica leaned down and planted a quick, soft kiss on his jaw. "Good luck in court today."
Though she knew a man of his caliber hardly needed luck to win a case, the gesture was her own small way of showing she cared. Before he could even react, she spun around and hurried out again.
A moment ago, Joseph had been frowning with displeasure. Now, a smile spread across his face like a warm spring breeze.
...
Arriving at the office, Vivica felt her nerves tense up the moment she stepped into the elevator lobby. She was terrified that Raymond would pop out from around a corner, or worse, that he would bring her with him.
Thankfully, her fears were unfounded. She made it all the way to her desk without incident. She was a little surprised. Last night, Raymond had said they were heading back to Sydville today. Could they already be on their way to the airport or the train station? If so, that would be for the best.
And yet… a familiar conflict churned within her. If they were really gone, did that mean she had missed her only chance to meet her biological parents? Would she regret this decision one day?
"Vivica."
A voice beside her startled her back to reality. It was Zavier.
