Vivica graciously accepted her in-laws' heartfelt gift.
Sheridan sipped his coffee, waiting for Melanie to finish chatting with her daughter-in-law. Then, he glanced toward his grandson, who was playing nearby, and nodded. "There's one more thing. Shouldn't Chaim change how he addresses people, too?"
Vivica paused, then looked toward Joseph, understanding dawning on her. "Dad, you mean… how Chaim calls Joseph?"
"Yes. We're all family, so what he calls him isn't the most important thing. But calling him 'Dad' would make you all look more like a proper family of three. For Chaim, it would also feel more like he has a complete home."
Before the old gentleman could finish, Chaim, who had been engrossed in his building blocks, turned his head and asked, "Can Uncle Joseph be my daddy now?"
The little boy had been fixated on this idea for a while. From the moment he first met Joseph, he had hoped this 'handsome man' could be his father.
Vivica's face lit up with excitement, but she was also a little hesitant. It would undoubtedly be a good thing for Chaim if he started calling Joseph 'Dad'. But she didn't know how Joseph felt about it…
All eyes turned to Joseph, waiting for his response. But Joseph just cleared his throat, a look of reluctance on his face.
Sheridan's expression hardened. "What's that reaction for? You don't want Chaim to call you Dad?"
Chaim immediately turned and asked, "Uncle, why don't you want to be my daddy? Didn't you say you could if Mommy liked you? Mommy likes you now! You kissed this morning, I saw it! Kissing means you like…"
"Chaim!" Vivica yelped, her face turning crimson as she rushed to cut him off.
Oh, heavens… When she woke up that morning, Joseph had somehow ended up back in her bed. Their eyes met, and she wasn't sure who initiated it, but a good morning kiss had followed.
Just as their lips met, Chaim had woken up and called for his mommy. They had sprung apart, thinking Chaim hadn't seen a thing. She never imagined the little guy had such sharp eyes—and the patience to keep quiet about it until now.
The atmosphere in the room suddenly grew awkward. Even Melanie blushed, while Sheridan hastily picked up his coffee cup, pretending to be very busy.
Vivica glanced at Sheridan and Melanie's reactions, then at the stoic Joseph, and her mind flashed back to their wild encounter in the bathroom the night before.
Thank goodness Chaim hadn't woken up then. If he had witnessed that, it would have been…
From now on, she resolved, no more fooling around in front of the child, not even when he was asleep.
Chaim looked confused. Hushed by his mother, he glanced around at the adults and continued, "But kissing does mean you like someone. Mommy likes me, so she kisses me all the time."
Vivica was mortified, shifting uncomfortably in her seat.
Melanie was also embarrassed. She quickly tried to smooth things over. "Chaim is right, dear. Kissing means you like each other. There's no need to be shy about it. If you're going to have a baby soon, you'll need to make the most of your time."
"Mom…" Vivica groaned, dying of embarrassment.
Melanie clapped her hands together. "I have an idea! From now on, we can stay here with Chaim every other night. That way, you two can go home and be alone, at least until Vivica is pregnant."
Joseph frowned. "Mom, even a workhorse needs a break. There has to be some moderation."
