Legally speaking, Evelyn was indeed her mother, so it made sense for her to act as a witness.
Joseph considered it for a moment, a slight frown on his face. “Aren’t you worried she’ll try to stir up trouble?”
“How could she? The last time I asked her how I came to the Lynn family, she claimed she found me at a train station. I’m almost certain that was a lie.”
A look of disgust crossed Vivica’s face as she remembered catching Evelyn with another man.
“If she adopted me through some illegal means, she’d be in legal trouble if it ever came out. To protect herself, she wouldn’t want me to find my biological parents, which means she’d have to cooperate with me.”
Vivica knew the plan was risky, but if it worked, it could finally put an end to Raymond’s doubts and make him leave. All she wanted was to focus on her son’s treatment, not deal with biological parents who had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
Joseph’s expression remained thoughtful. After a moment, he nodded. “It’s worth a shot. The worst-case scenario is that your identity is revealed. But even then, you’re an adult. If you refuse to acknowledge them, there’s nothing they can do.”
“Okay, I’ll call her now,” Vivica said, pulling out her phone. Having made up her mind, she didn’t hesitate. She went to her blocked list and found the number for Evelyn, whom she hadn’t contacted in ages.
Joseph went into the hospital room and, seeing that Chaim was still asleep, came back out.
Vivica stood holding the phone to her ear, but after a long while, there was still no answer.
“It’s not connecting. I wonder if something happened to her,” Vivica murmured, realizing it had been some time since they had last spoken.
Joseph placed a comforting hand on her back. “It’s getting late. Why don’t we get something to eat first? You can try again later.”
