Her expression hardened slightly. “Melanie, I’m going to step outside to take this call,” she said in a low voice.
This whole affair was far from over, and Vivica didn’t want Sheridan and Melanie to worry about her. Besides, Chaim had just fallen asleep, and she didn’t want to wake him.
“Of course, dear. We’ll watch him,” Melanie whispered.
Vivica stepped out of the room and answered the phone. “Hello, Zavier.”
“Vivica, I heard your son was hospitalized with a high fever. How is he?” Zavier’s first words were of concern for Chaim.
“His fever has gone down for now, but he’s been admitted for his second round of chemotherapy.”
Vivica told him the truth, then quickly took control of the conversation before he could speak again. “Mr. Smith has arrived in Riverdale, hasn’t he? Unfortunately, I can’t make it tonight. I have to stay at the hospital with my son. He gets fussy when he’s sick and only wants his mom. No one else will do.”
Zavier was with Raymond, and the phone was on speaker. Raymond heard every word clearly. The two men exchanged a look.
Zavier pressed on, “What about tomorrow? If you don’t have time for dinner, we could meet for a coffee. Or we could come to the hospital to see you and visit the boy.”
Vivica had anticipated this. She knew that since Raymond had come all this way, he wouldn’t leave without meeting her. But coming to the hospital to see Chaim was absolutely out of the question. She wanted nothing to do with them herself; she certainly wasn’t going to let them near her son. If she couldn’t avoid it, she would have to face it.
“That won’t be necessary. If Chaim’s condition is stable tomorrow and I can go to work, we can meet at the coffee shop downstairs from my office.”
“Alright, that works,” Zavier said, his tone relaxing slightly. “You take care of your son. We won’t disturb you any further.”
The call ended, and Vivica lowered her phone. She stared out at the darkening sky, a gloomy feeling settling over her.
Worried that Chaim might wake up, she allowed herself only a moment of melancholy before composing herself and turning to go back into the room.
