Vivica winced at his tone but kept her own voice polite and cheerful. “Good morning. Have you left for work yet?”

“If you have something to say, just say it.”

“Uh, well, if you’re still home, I was hoping to video chat with Chaim.”

“So now you remember you have a son?” he shot back, his voice sharp.

Vivica was speechless. Even from thousands of miles away, she could feel the weight of his displeasure crushing her.

Before she could respond, the line went dead.

Just as she was assuming he had already left for work and couldn't be bothered, a video call came through. She gasped, a wave of delight washing over her. He was still home.

In truth, Joseph had been on his way out the door. He had his own business trip the next day and a mountain of work to sort out at the firm. But when Vivica called, her concern for their son evident, he had turned back and walked toward the dining room where Chaim was eating breakfast.
