When Sheridan opened the box, Vivica gasped. Inside lay a pendant of the most brilliant, translucent emerald green. She immediately started shaking her head and waving her hands in refusal.

"Let's hold off on the heirloom for now," he said, addressing his parents. "He's too young to understand its significance. You'd be better off buying him some snacks and toys."

"Are you refusing because you think there are strings attached?" Joseph asked bluntly. "Worried you'll owe us something? Relax. We're not going to try and take the child from you."

"Of course not," Vivica denied quickly. "That's not what I'm thinking at all. It's just…" She struggled for a moment, then found an excuse. "I haven't even moved out of my old place, and I'm at the hospital all the time. These things are too valuable, and I have nowhere to keep them."
