Sophia had imagined the gift Luna prepared for their first meeting to be cash, jewelry, or some kind of luxury item.
But she never expected Luna's gift to be an entire villa.
"Mrs. Holt." Sophia turned around, looking at her anxiously. "This gift is too expensive."
"It's not expensive at all. Go open the door. After you and Zachary get married, you'll live here. It's a little distance away from us, but not too far. You have your own privacy here while still letting us take care of you. It's just perfect!
"Sophia, don't think of it as something precious. You already own a villa yourself. Compared to that, this gift from me is nothing.
"Go ahead, open the door and take a look."
With Luna's encouragement, Sophia finally swiped the card and stepped inside.
Once they were inside the property, Luna handed her another card. "Here, swipe this one too."
This time, Sophia obediently swiped the card and opened the inner door.
"Go in and take a look."
Sophia took a step inside and saw the living room filled with gift boxes of all sizes, along with a big cake. Written on the cake was, "Welcome home, Sophia."
Each of the gift boxes was numbered, from "1" all the way to "23".
"These gifts are from Edmund and myself, one for every year of your birthday until now."
Luna smiled as she spoke. "Because you used to be engaged to Sky from the Walker family, and because the Holt and Sinclair families never had much work together, we didn't have much involvement in your past.
"But life is so strange and wonderful. Who would've thought that you'd end up with Zachary and become our daughter-in-law someday?"
As Luna spoke, she reached up to wipe her eyes. "Sophia, you have no idea. That rascal, Zachary, kept everything hidden so well. All these years, he never dated anyone or hung out with girls.
"His dad and I were once worried he might be… you know, into men. Every day we lived on edge, terrified that one day he would bring a boyfriend home.
"When we found out the person he loved was you, Edmund and I finally breathed a huge sigh of relief.
"Sophia, you rescued Zachary. Edmund and I are especially grateful to you. Whatever you want, just tell us. Right now, we're Mr. Holt and Mrs. Holt. In the future, we'll be your parents-in-law, and we'll surely dote on you.
"We absolutely won't give Zachary any chance to bully or let you down. If he dares to cheat after marriage, I will break his dick and make sure he never has children."
Sophia was rendered speechless for a moment. That sounded way too brutal. It hurt just hearing it.
"Mrs. Holt, is Zachary really your biological son?" Sophia asked cautiously. "Wouldn't cutting off his future like that be too harsh?"
"Silly girl, of course he's my biological son. But even if he is, he still deserves punishment if he ever makes a mistake."
Luna pulled Sophia's hand to start opening the gifts. "Once a man changes his heart, his body gets dirty too.
"Even though Zachary is my son, he's still a man. I'm a mother, but I'm also a woman. One day, you'll be a mother too. You know very well that if a man has illegitimate children, it's the wife and her children who suffer most.
"Sophia, I'm saying this not to reopen your wounds, but to let you know that because you've been through such pain yourself, you must never make excuses for a man who betrays you. They're not worthy of it. Even if that person is my own son, he would still not be worth it.
"Sophia, I'm a woman and a mother, but I won't blindly protect my own, nor will I be unreasonable. So you can rest easy. Don't carry any burdens in your heart.
"If you and Zachary can't walk down the same path one day, that's okay too. As long as you're willing, you and I can still stay connected. I'll still love you like my own daughter.
"Now then, let's open the gifts, Sophia."
