Chapter 271
Once the guard had deposited me on my bed like a sack of potatoes, I was alone.
But I refused to sit around and wallow. I had to escape. I was not going to abort my child.
I didn’t hesitate. The moment I was alone, I slipped off the bed and scoured my tent. There were no weapons, but I decided that the mirror would have to do. I placed a sheet over it from my bed to muffle the sound, then pounded it with my fist until I felt the glass crack. Then, I pried a large piece loose and hurried over to the back of my tent, as far from my guard as I could get.
I carefully sliced into the canvas. The shard of glass cut into my palm, drawing blood, but I didn’t stop. I kept cutting until there was a flap large enough to squeeze through.
I pocketed the glass just in case and dropped to all fours. I peeked through the slit, finding nothing but a small, makeshift alleyway between my tent and a few others. Once I was certain the coast was clear, I crawled through.
The sun was still high in the sky, leaving few shadows to cover me. I kept low and darted between the tents. This city was a fucking mess. I didn’t know which way to go, or where the best path would take me. Everything was a sea of canvas and wood and piles of debris.
Finally, I spotted a potential exit-a wide pathway leading through a gate into the woods. I peeked around the corner of a tent and looked both ways. There were rogues pacing back and forth on a patrol. Guards. I’d have to time my movements perfectly.
I counted their steps. Each one walked about fifteen to twenty paces in one direction before turning. They moved in opposite directions, so they always had eyes on both sides. But if I could dart across the road right while they were turning, they might not see me. I’d have to go back and forth until I reached the gate, but it was doable.
The first one went smoothly. I darted across the road and dove behind a barrel before they spotted me. My heart leapt into my threat, but I immediately sprang back to my feet and waited for the next opportunity,
It was on the second attempt that it all went wrong. My foot caught on the barrel I’d been hiding behind just as I jumped out, It teetered, then fell, sending potatoes rolling across the ground.
The guards both whirled toward me.
“Hey!”

“Get her!”
Shit.
I made a run for the gate, but another rogue blocked my path and shoved me back before I could reach it. I sprawled across the dirt, and my head began spinning so violently that I think I lost consciousness.
“Gideon…”
When I woke, I was in my bed. I could see the shadows of multiple people moving around, silhouetted through the canvas. Asher must have stationed extra guards all around me.
Before I could get my bearings, the flap opened and Deirdre walked in, carrying a tray of food.
I sat up and glared at her. “I don’t want that.”‘
“The King says you have to eat.” She pursed her lips angrily.
Of course he did. It was probably poisoned with the abortion drugs. Just to make a point, I took the tray from her and walked over to my makeshift bathroom.
Then, without breaking eye contact, I promptly dumped the food into my chamber pot. Right along with the piss and shit.
I handed the tray back to Deirdre, who was now staring at the pot in shock.
